The Terra di Bari is a subregion of central Puglia. The expression defines, from a merely geographical point of view, the flat area between the Murge in the south-west and the Adriatic Sea in the north-east between the mouth of the Ofanto and the city of Fasano.
With the same denomination, from 1231 to 1861, an administrative subdivision was indicated comprising a larger territory, extended to a large part of the Murge and subsequently called the province of Bari.
The Adriatic-Bari coast and its immediate hinterland, especially during the Roman Empire and the X-XIII centuries of the Middle Ages, have experienced a great development for the transit function carried out. Different centers such as Canosa, Trani, Molfetta, Bari, Monopoli, Egnazia being located along the Via Traiana, an Adriatic variant of the famous Via Appia, had a great demographic and economic growth. The role of bridge with the East was performed again during the Crusades period. To go to the Holy Land, thousands of pilgrims flowed from central-western Europe and after passing by the Sanctuary of Saint Mikael on the Gargano, they embarked in one of the Apulian ports to go to the Holy Land. Many city centers date back to this period.
Canosa, Egnazia and Canne take us back with their vestiges to the Roman period and the first centuries of Christianity, or even Peucetian ones as in the case of Ruvo. Despite the high population density, there are many beautiful beaches along the coast and in the case of Polignano and Monopoli they have the reputation of being spectacular.
Castles, beaches, historic centers, "puli", dolmens, olive groves ... the Terra di Bari is a land to be discovered.

"From afar Bari has a magnificent effect. The city is defended by a double wall and an ancient castle; it stands on a rocky triangular peninsula of about a mile in circumference. The houses are generally very modest ... The walk on the new bastion behind the port it is the most pleasant; at each turn a different panorama of the sea and the coast opens up, from the cliffs of the Gargano to the hills of Ostuni ... ".
So wrote, at the end of the eighteenth century, the English traveler Henry Swinburne. Bari is the capital of Puglia and has about 320,000 inhabitants. The city develops on the coast of the Lower Adriatic and is one of the most active economic centers of Southern Italy, the main economic center of the entire region as well as for technological research. It is home to the annual "Fiera del Levante". Even the hasty visitor quickly notices that the city is made up of two distinct parts: on one side there is "Bari Vecchia", that includes the most important medieval and Renaissance monuments such as the Romanesque cathedral, dedicated to "San Sabino", the Romanesque basilica of "San Nicola", the Norman-Swabian castle of "Federico II", the church of "San Ferdinando", the "Fortino di Sant'Antonio Abate". It is the most characteristic part of Bari, composed of small alleys of rare beauty, panoramic views, ancient perfumes. The second part is the so-called "Bari Nuova", born in the early nineteenth century with an edict by Joachin Murat, and characterized by open, long and straight roads.
When you arrive at Trani, the only thing to do is remain dumb and ecstatic in front of the cathedral that rises up to the sky much alike an acropolis.
City of art, Trani has an important history to be proud of. The first settlements dating the Bronze Age were found around Capo Colonna area. During Roman historic times, the city is reported on the map of Via Traiana with the name of Turenum.
The Middle Ages, more than any other period, make Trani a prestigious city, as well as a crossroads for numerous exchanges of cultures and peoples. The "Ordinamenta Maris" maritime codes are quite famous for codifying for the first time the commercial navy. Another period that characterized Trani was the Swabians rule with the imposing Castle facing the sea as testimony. Between conquests, falls and thriving recoveries, Trani is one of the cities where history is told by walking through the town.
