With its 192,000 hectares, divided between Basilicata and Calabria, the Pollino National Park is the largest in Italy.
Considered one of the most beautiful and characteristic massifs of the Lucanian Apennines, its name derives from the top of the Pollino massif, the "Mons Apollineum", which the Achaeans defined as "Mount of Apollo", identifying it a little in Olympus, for the its grandeur that almost touches the sky.
As in other parks in Italy, the main activity within the Pollino is made up of trekking along the paths; along captivating itineraries and routes, one enters dense beech and Turkey oak woods, such as the "Magnano forest" located near San Severino Lucano, but also with fir and chestnut trees and grassy plateaus, up to "meet" sinuous, proud and secular, the Bosnian Pines, symbol of the park, visible above all on the top of Serra di Crispo, called the "Garden of the Gods" precisely because it is considered one of the sanctuaries of this rare arboreal species with a twisted trunk.
Among these expanses there are specimens of Apennine wolf, wild boar and roe deer, squirrels, porcupines and otters, but also woodpeckers and eagle owls. Among the highest peaks of the entire southern Apennine arch, flown by golden eagles, peregrine falcons and kestrels, Serra Dolcedorme, the "roof" of the park, must certainly be mentioned.
Watercoarses, such as the Frido and Peschiera creaks that affect the territory of San Severino Lucano, and rocky outcrops, deep faults and scary chasms cross the Pollino Park, "populated" also by fossils dating back tens of thousands of years ago , like the skeleton of an "Elephans antiquus italicus", four meters high and lived about seven hundred thousand years ago, found in the Mercure Valleys and currently kept in the Naturalistic and Paleontological Museum of Rotonda, seat of the Park.
Nature, sport and culture come together in this extraordinary green area of Basilicata and Calabria, a treasure chest not only of environmental beauties but also of museums where ancient memories, history and traditions of the peasant civilization and arbëreshë communities flock.

Talking about the Pollino National Park means talking about trekking. It is the largest national park in Italy and consequently the paths and territories that you can explore are vast and varied. In addition to traditional trekking for which there is a need to equip yourself with sturdy mountain boots, very sought after is the excursion of the Raganello Gorges. It is a matter of going up walking in the water along a stream that flows between the spectacular rocky walls.
For those who love calm and relaxing walks instead the Bosco Magnano with the Peschiera stream, are an idyllic picture almost fairy tale in which to immerse yourself. In the waters of Peschiera you can spot the otter.
Also the villages of the park can be a very interesting visit. Morano Calabro and Civita are two beautiful villages on the Calabrian side of Pollino but as well as Civita there are many towns of Arbëreshe culture on both sides of Basilicata and Calabria.
